Just a little update to mention a few random things about the Hawkeye 50K/25K.
1. We may have a person willing to work on our logo, which would go on t-shirts, signs, the web site, brochures, etc. She is Brianna Stultz.
2. Currently there is no race anywhere, that I know of, that donates proceeds to Lupus research. (There are walks.) It turns out that at the University of Iowa there is at least one researcher, Dr. Peter Lenert, who is doing some great work on the Lupus front. Furthermore the University of Iowa has a foundation set up to support Lupus research. At this time, this is where any proceeds from the race will go. This isn't set in stone yet though.
3. I can't seem to decide on an exact race date. I'm down to two possibilities: Nov 6 or Dec 4 (both Saturdays) of 2010. A lot of thought has went into this. I kind of favor Dec 4 for various reasons, even though I'm aware it will be a bit colder then. The race start will be at a lodge, with a fireplace. (Well there is a fireplace outside. Not sure about inside yet.) The runners probably won't care about the cold. It's the volunteers who will get chilly. Speaking of which...
4. I'm still looking for volunteers. It's early to gather them up for race day, but I'm in particular need of the following poeple: 1) A sponsor/race packet coordinator: rounding up sponsors and dealing with race packets, 2) A food coordinator: not only for aid stations but for the post-race party if we have one, 3) A volunteer coordinator: overseeing the race-day volunteers, and 4) A safety coordinator: knowing how to deal with the safety/medical aspects of a race, e.g., if someone gets injured. If you just want to help with any of these things, please let me know. Or anything else you think I might need - if you can help with it, please do!
5. I am hoping to run the course on the weekend of March 20. (I may run it twice, the full 50K, but I'm not sure on that yet.) I'm not exactly sure which day or what time yet, but probably Saturday morning. I invite anyone to come along with me to do at least one lap. This won't be a race. Just a leisure run. I would like to get feedback on the course. Right now the course is roughly 0.5 miles too short but hopefully by then I'll have figured out how to add that extra half mile.
6. I'm hoping to help out with a race put on by the University of Iowa Trihawks this spring, so that my provide me with some much needed experience.
7. I've gotten some good tips from some folks, including Joe Dwyer of Running Wild, so visit his stores. Also John from Running Wall. Also Pasha who is initiating a new triathlon near Lake Macbride. (See XTERRA Sugar Bottom).
8. Here's something you all can help with. If I play music at the start/finish, what would make for great running songs!?
If you did not get the first email about this race, please visit the web site and you can view it there.
